I'M TURNING 30 & FIGHTING LEUKEMIA!!
I have some exciting news to share with you!! On June 2, 2002, I will walk the Rock 'N Roll Marathon in San Diego, California. Yep – 26.2 miles! So you're probably wondering what has inspired (or possessed!) me to do such a thing. I recently learned about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's "Team In Training." Team in Training is a national endurance training program. The Team in Training coaches and mentors will help me with all of the training, nutritional and motivational information I will need to complete 26.2 miles and cross that finish line. What is really special about this program -- and the main reason I knew this was the training program for me -- is that each runner is paired with a "patient honoree". Each honoree has been diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. Some are in remission, while others are actively battling these blood-related cancers. Did you know that more than 640,000 Americans are presently living with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, and that 60,400 people diagnosed with these cancers die each year? A child dies from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma every 9 minutes. There are an estimated 106,7000 new cases of blood-related cancers which will be diagnosed in the United States this year. That means that every 5 minutes, someone new will learn that he or she has leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma – and that's almost 300 people a day. More research money is needed to help find a cure for these cancers. Alex Conley is my honored patient. He is a 7-year old living with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). ALL is the most common form of childhood leukemia. In 1960, only 4% of children with ALL survived; today, ALL is considered a curable disease, with a survival rate of over 80%! Although he is currently in his maintenance program, he still faces a year of chemotherapy treatments. Despite his illness, Alex loves sports! When he's not playing basketball, baseball or riding his bike, he's at home with his family eating pizza, playing his guitar and singing and dancing. It is my privilege to walk in Alex's honor on December 2nd. While I will be racing only one day in December, Alex faces a race for life each day until a cure is found. To further honor Alex on June 2nd, I have committed to raising $3,200 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Alex's honor. Nearly 80% of all monies donated go directly to fund on-going research. Together with your support, we can help Alex and others like him win the race for life by helping to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Your donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is 100% tax deductible. Make sure to check with your employer because many offer company matching programs that will double your donation! Just click on the "Donate" button for more information. Thank you for your help in support of this worthwhile case. You can track Alex's progress with his treatment, as well as my training and fundraising progress, by periodically checking back and clicking on "Diary". Let me know if I can answer any of your questions about these blood-related cancers, treatment options, or the Team in Training program. In addition, if you have friends or family members who have been touched by leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, I'd be more than happy to run in their honor, too. Just send along their names with your check. With your help, I know we can win this race. I wish you all happiness and good health. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training Program is the Official Training Program for the Marathon. In the past four years, with over an astonishing 19,000 Team-In-Training participants running in the Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathons, a total $48 million (gross) has been netted for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The first Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon made history on June 21, 1998, when the biggest single-day sporting event charity raised an undreamed $15.6 million. TNT sent more than 6,000 of its members to The Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in 1998. In 2001, nearly 4,000 participants came from every TNT chapter in the country. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program includes a coach, training group, workout and nutritional advice, as well as travel and hotel expenses. There are 57 TNT Chapters nationwide. To find out more about The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program, call (800) 482-TEAM, or visit the website at www.teamintraining.org |
